How to Create Free Compact Disc and DVD Cases Online

With Paper CD Case, you can create an ad hoc case for a newly burned CD or DVD or a CD/DVD whose original case has broken.

Paper CD Case works in a very simple fashion: you just fold a sheet of paper according to the instructions on the site. First, you fill in a form asking the CD title and contents information. Next you print out a sheet with that information. Then you fold the sheet, which has some guideline marks on it, according to step-by-step instructions.

Convert PDF to Microsoft Word .doc Format for Free

Ever have a PDF with some content that you wanted to change, but couldn't since you didn't have PDF editing software?

If so, PDF to Word might be for you. This site says it's still in beta mode, but you couldn't tell by the quality of the product. I used it to convert a PDF that contained an image, a couple of font faces, and a header block. The converted Word .doc file looked wonderful -- it was an exact replica of the PDF, except it was editable.

PDF to Word also allows you to convert to .rtf format if you want more universality.

The site emails converted file to you, so you do have to submit an email address. However, the privacy policy states that the email address is never used to send unsolicited emails to you and it is never sold. In addition, the PDF you sent for conversion, and the resulting .doc or .rtf file, are destroyed immediately after conversion and sending, respectively.

Here's a screen capture of the web page:

How to File Your Federal Taxes for Free Online

Just 4 days left until the deadline for having filed your taxes.

There are many options for filing your taxes for free:

  1. File for free through the IRS' own FreeFile if you met the criteria for eligibility. If your adjusted gross income is $56,000 or less, you qualify for free tax preparation and electronic filing.
  2. Filing form 1040EZ or other simple returns? Then TurboTax Free Edition is worth looking into. The free version does not offer the ability to download your tax information from the "over 100,000 participating employers and financial institutions nor does it import your information from the previous year (provided you had a previous year's filing done with TurboTax). But those are small hassles to overcome in order to get a free federal filing.
  3. TaxAct Online 2008 Standard is yet another option for those filing simple returns and forms 1040EZ, 1040A, and 1040 and even Schedule C business income and expenses. TaxAct also claims to have "one of the lowest priced state returns." It appears to have more features than does TurboTax Free.
  4. For those that qualify, FreeTaxUSA also offers free filing. You have to live in "AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, UT, VA, or WV" plus your adjusted gross income must be $56,000 or less.
All those above apply only to Federal filings. All of the above seem to offer some sort of accuracy guarantee, but make sure to read the fine print.

How to Get Free Trustworthy Drive Partitioning Software for Windows

Really savvy computer owners know the value of partitioning their hard drives. One pain about partitioning a hard drive is that if you do it the old fashioned way (DOS FDISK, Windows XP Disk Management ), you'll lose data. On-the-fly re-partitioning is definitely the way to go. While Vista has a built-in partitioning feature that allows for on-the-fly re-partitioning, XP has no such offering. Until recently, I relied on a Linux live CD with GParted to repartition my disks. This worked fine for the most part, but still I had to log off WIndows, insert the Linux CD, reboot, and then unmount the drives once in Knoppix (the live CD distro I tend to use). Then luckily one day I learned about the EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition, which allows for ON-THE-FLY repartitioning! Yes, I had struck a freeware gold mine -- I immediately Googled for reviews to make sure that the software was indeed legit. Then I went to the EASEUS site to read what the catch was; the catch is very reasonable: the free version is for home users only. After reading nothing but good reviews, I decided to test the EASEUS software. It worked spectacularly and was extremely easy to use. Granted, I was pretty familar with the interface and features from using GParted; however, I think that anyone competent enough to reparition a hard drive is going to catch on to using EASEUS quickly.

Rather than make one or two of my own screen captures, I'll provide the link to EASEUS' own page of screen captures depicting a number of different features.
